I've been working on my game again a lot lately. I have regions of the map load dynamically now as you near the edge of another, so there are no loading screens!
I've also optimized many of my functions, so it runs fast and smooth. my slow computer loads a level in less that 1.5 seconds, and my fast one in less than 0.5 seconds. I imagine that with added features, such as NPC's and whatnot, the time might increase by 1 second or so, but it doesn't really matter, as far as the area loads before you reach the edge of it.
